student magazine survey results

Survey results
Question 1
when i asked "are you interested in having a school magazine?" of the 4 people that responded all 4 voted yes, ill will have to assume that a majority of pupils in our school would want a school magazine. Even though not alot of people responded to my survey i will have to use the results given to me, so the school wold like a magazine.

Question 2
when i asked "what main themes should the magazine focus on?" the majority wanted the magazine to focus on life and school stress so i will dedicate most of my magazine to this topic, the runners up, subjects and revision tips, had the same amount of votes so i will dedicated a smaller part of my magazine to these topics. Fashion was an option but no one voted for this topic so i will not include it in my school magazine.
Question 3
when i asked "what is your favourite core subject?" this question has a 50/50 answer the answers with the only responses were maths and english, so using the response will primarily speak about maths and english as it appears pupils are more interested in those subjects.
Question 4
when i asked "who should write the magazines" the main response was staff members which was surprising as i thought students would have been the most popular choice but its not, staff members cannot be expected to write the magazine as they already have a heavy work load
Question 5
when i asked "should we discuss the life problems with students?" i got a 50/50 results i will make the decision to speak about life issues as i believe it will help readers
Question 6
when i asked "how many pictures on the front cover would you like?" a majority answered one so i will only use one photo on my front cover
Question 7
when i asked "what should the font be?" the majority answered for the all star font
Question 8
When i asked "what subjects should be discussed" the majority answered for creative subjects e.g. art drama, this is the result i suspected as many pupils enjoy these subjects
Question 9
when i asked "do you think a school magazine would be beneficial to school students?"all of the responses voted yes so i believe it would be a good idea for a school magazine
Question 10
when i asked "how much it should it cost to buy one" a majority said the magazine should be free and provided by the school

photoshop analysis

Photoshop analysis

photoshop test 1
In my first attempt of editing my images i used the bucket fill icon and i played around with the saturation and contrast of the  image, in this photo i mainly just played around with the app as i never used it before so this was me just figuring out how to use it. The ending result was this explosion looking background that i think is attention grabbing and vibrant but it is too much and doesn't have a professional finish to the cover so i wont be using it as it is only a test but this can pave me on the right way to making a magazine cover.

music magazine analysis: double page spread

NME
the look of this double page spread is vibrant and fun, the masthead of the spread is "The gospel According to Nicki Minaj", the masthead is large and bright and covers a large portion of the page, the look of this spread is exciting and vibrant and easily attracts attention, the spread is clearly about Nicki this is made obvious by the photo, the bold, fun image used clearly represents Nicki's "fun and qwerky" image. the artist is wearing bright vibrant lipstick to compliment the background. the masthead is big and bold and grabs the readers attention straight away. the text is cut and spread across the pages, the different section talk about different topics, they have targeted the magazine to young girls as they are more likely to listen to her.

NME
The model takes up one whole page so it is clear who the article is about as she dominates the whole cover, "USA" is bold and in the background suggesting that the USA has a role to play in the article, the artist in a tight black dress and high heels this could be to sexualise the artist to appeal to the male audience, the black in the outfit cold be a reference to gothic which connotes to the indie genre, the american flag suggests a patronism from the artist, the monochromatic colors of the spread aren't really eye catching so the spread is easily glanced over, the text is compressed in a small corner and the size of the font is small, the mast head is dull and isn't striking and the highlighted name of the model is easily lost.

Q
the model takes up a whole pages so is the focus of the reader, there isn't a large title bare the artists name in a formal font, the large red "L" is vey vibrant and is obviously a reference to gaga, the photo of the model is very on brand with her own style so gives it the musicians own personal touch. the editing on the photo make its it more monochromatic and classic, so it looks older and can appeal to Qs target audience of 20-40 year olds, the image is quite sexual to maybe grab the male audiences attention. she is looking directly in to the reader so it builds a relationship between the two.

music magazine analysis:content pages

content pages analysis

Q
This is a contents page for Q. The colour scheme is kept the same as the front cover. The colour scheme is simple and effective to the readers, as it is easy to read.they are contrasting colours, which allows the text to stand out more easily. On the contents page they have only shown a few of the stories the magazine features. They have left no spare room on this, which is a positive because it shows that they have used the space effectively.

CloserThis is closer magazine contents page. It uses several images which also tells us what story they are in with the page number. The colour scheme is the same as the front cover. They use a mixture of pink, yellow, and white. The magazine has a pink background with a story printed on top of the background. The white background is filled with the information of the page numbers and what story is on them. The master head ‘this week in closer’ is promoting. That has a yellow background which make it stand out from the rest. The content page also consist of a picture of the next week magazine. The font size which is written to give more detail on the story, is kept the same. This is simple. The bolder and bigger writing is the subtitles. The magazine content page is crowded but kept simple.

Glamour
This is a Glamour contents page. The contents page uses one large dominant image, this gives the reader a sense of one of the article the magazine features. The image relates to fashion, which is what the article is focusing on. Readers know by the image this is a fashion based magazine. The master uses bright colours making it stand out fromwhite background. Cover lines are separated, meaning it is easy for readers to find what page they want. The title of the articles are black and bold which makes them stand out. using red which goes well with the master head tells us clearly what the number of the page is.

music magazine analysis:front covers

music magazine analysis

The Rolling Stones
the obvious focus of the magazine is amy, she is placed in the centre of the magazine catching the readers eye, as amy is the main story in this issue a large caption is placed at the bottom so it is clearly read and is not shadowing amy, two smaller headlines are towards the left hand side so they don't overcast amy but are red to standout more so the reader can gather more information of the magazine.
Q

starring in the centre of the magazine is adele and is clear that she is the main article as she is the main focus in the magazine, she is in a dramatic pose to capture the readers attention. the captions are tightly packed together so the reader could get a lot of information in one look, the main caption is brightly placed in the lower half so that it doesn't shade over adele but shines to grab a potential buyers eye, the main header is rightly placed in the left top corner and brightly contrasts the colours of the rest of the magazine.

Q
the magazine style is a lot different in the two Q magazines we've looked at, this style is a lot more fun and colourful, the stylised typography to look like Lana's handwriting gives a more personal feel to the magazine, the captions are more flown around rather than collectively together. In the centre of the magazine stands lana in a gruesome scenario, the photo is a satirical take on horror this makes the magazine look more catching to buyers.

uses and gratifications

uses and gratifications

Uses and gratifications theory is an approach to understanding why and how people actively seek out specific media to satisfy specific needs. Uses and gratifications is an audience-centered approach to understanding mass communication. Diverging from other media effect theories that question "what does media do to people?", Uses and gratifications focuses on "what do people do with media?"

Modern applications of uses and gratifications research
Mobile phone usage

Mobile phones, a comparatively new technology, have many uses and gratifications attached to them. Due to their nature of mobility, constant access, and options to both add and access content, this field is expanding with new research on the motivations behind using mobile phones.

In general, people use mobile phones for the following uses and gratifications

  • Affection/sociability
  • Entertainment
  • Instrumentality
  • Psychological reassurance
  • Fashion/status
  • Mobility
  • Immediate access

Social media usage

Recent research has looked at social networking services, personal and subject-based blogs, and internet forums put together to study the U&G in posting social content, the relationship between gratifications and narcissism, and the effects of age on this relationship and these gratifications. Users have motivations of the following overall:

  • Social and affection
  • Need to vent negative feelings
  • Recognition
  • Entertainment
  • Cognitive needs
Music magazine contents page analysis

The Uses and Gratifications Theory can be used to describe why some people would want to look at a music magazine. We could say that someone would want to look at a music magazine because they are interested in music. Another example could be more specific, such as someone might be interested in reading about the band oasis or another example would be someone who is interested in reviews on concerts or radio shows, or tour recommendations.

student magazine research

research

these are two different magazines that i will be drawing inspiration from, they are both marketed towards young adults they both give advice about school life, they are long running magazines and are used frequently by students. their marketing and aesthetic are very successful to teens because they have bold colours and large loud typography its is very easy to see what the front cover reads so is easily noticed by teens.

a problem i see with these magazines is that they are heavily marketed to girls, i would like to try and appeal to a male teenage audience as a lot of boys could do with advice. they way i will ry to market to young male adults is by having a male on the cover and maybe using boyish colours.

Teen Vogue
A bright focus point of model to attract potential buyers, dynamic contrast in background and title to further interest buyers, cover lines attract costumers but don't over shadow model and title but still give great information into the magazine, the main cover lines is placed well so it doesn't shade over the model.

Seventeen
This magazine has bright model in centre of the cover this interests the potential buyers in the magazine, the main header is vibrant and enchants buyers,
